Why Our Art College Portfolio is Different

Admission to Ivy League colleges and universities is becoming more and more difficult. It is not uncommon for students to have excellent GPAs, do volunteer work, be involved in sports, play musical instruments and have leadership skills as part of their resume.

It is time to show your visually creative side to help give you the edge you need to prove you are the one who stands out in the college application process. Schools want successful students both intellectually and creatively!

Description

College Portfolio Prep is an integrative studio course where students will focus on creating a competitive portfolio for their college application Portfolio Prep students will gain a more sophisticated understanding of the creative process and develop a more diverse portfolio. Our experienced instructors and college professors provide excellent guidance and critique each student individually. Students receive his or her own customized assignments and projects that will be best to help them build a strong and well-rounded college portfolio that will stand out when applying to art schools and colleges. Advanced techniques such as heat transferred digital printing and installation may be introduced.

The Portfolio

A minimum background in art is required to enter the course, and the student’s current work will be evaluated to decide if can be included in the portfolio. If a student chooses to, we can refine and develop any previous works of art to a higher quality level to be included in the final portfolio. Student will develop concepts for completing their portfolio to meet requirements for up to six art colleges and create 20 college-level works incorporating a wide range of ideas, media, techniques, and skill sets, including:

 Five 2-D Design Works (Graphic design, 2D design, branding, 3D Modeling( optional), Fabric digital printing)
 Ten Analog Works of Art (Drawing, Paintings, Mixed Media, Collage, etc.)
 One 3-D Design Installation Work
 One 3-D Dye Sublimation Piece (Special Technique Heat Transfer)
 Three Mixed Media and Sculpture Works (including 3-D modeling)

What is Expected

The course focuses on building a competitive portfolio for college admission. Coursework introduces students to effective visual communication techniques and is structured around exercises in photo documentation, preparing artist statements and written descriptions, portfolio curation and much more. This will be accomplished with the curatorial help of our professional instructors and AP leaders. The finished portfolio will consist of 20 works that have clear evidence of:

1. Drawing Skills: a core component of visual expression as well as a platform for artistic inquiry and communication. If work is lacking in strong drawing or painting skills we will work with that student by instructing them with specific projects to make the portfolio balanced in all types of media and techniques.
2. 2-D Design Skills: 2-D design is broad-based and covers photography, digital media, graphic design, drawing, painting, and more. Our online class will introduce students to unique artmaking processes with our in-house large format digital printer.
3. 3-D Design Skills: 3-D design is about an understanding of occupied and unoccupied space and all types of forms in a series of projects emphasizing the manipulation, organization and analysis of form and structure in space. Artist’s Statement and Recommendation Letters

A clearly written and insightful artist statement is critical to a successful college portfolio.  We are keen on developing a student voice that is well-articulated in their Artist Statement.  For an additional fee, we can also assist in writing student essays which are necessary for college applications, using key visual arts terminology and concepts. Once the program is completed, a Recommendation Letter will be provided by our college professors and art teachers to the colleges the student is applying to.
